Over the last few years, the Liverpool Salon has been hosting public conversations around many of the important issues we are grappling with today: questions about citizenship, national borders and migration; about democracy, political agency and the political choices that face us; about the future of the economy. Above all questions about the kind of society we want to live in. The starting point for the latest Liverpool Salon was to take stock of the changed political reality, which has followed Britain’s vote to leave the EU. In particular, to try and make sense of the disaffection – between different sections of society and between large numbers of British people and their political institutions – which that decision has laid bare. We invited John Fitzpatrick back to open the discussion. John had previously taken part in a panel discussion las November, which looked at radical politics today in the light of ideas of tolerance, freethinking and historical struggles for democracy. We asked him to come back to give his perspective on the vote for Brexit and take part in a discussion about where it has taken us and where it might lead. The film is a fifteen minute extract from a conversation with the audience. A more detailed summary of John’s opening remarks alongside transcripts of the very interesting and challenging questions and comments from the audience is written up, well worth reading and available via this link.
